They say that prevention is the best medicine, and that certainly applies to safe driving. Below are several tips for what to do to correct a slide when driving on icy roads along with some bonus tips on how to prevent skidding in the first place.

How to Pull Out of a Skid

  • Once your wheels begin to lose traction and slide, follow these steps:
  • Let off the gas pedal
  • Gently turn your steering wheel in the direction of the skid to cancel the skid
  • As your vehicle corrects the skid, gently turn your steering wheel back again to straighten out
  • Gently pump the brake pedal as needed, but avoid hard braking

How to Prevent a Skid

  • Drive slower than normal on icy roads. The faster your vehicle is moving, the higher the risk of sliding.
  • Increase your following distance. Stay a good four seconds or more behind the vehicle directly in front of you.
  • Replace tires with worn-out treading. Snow chains should also be used when conditions require them.
  • Slow down before entering turns and gently pump brakes as needed
